Modern style patio doors

Adding a patio to your home not only adds a pleasant outdoor space, but the patio doors and adjacent windows allow more light into the house as well.

The length and floorplan of your home and the slope of your yard will determine the length and width of the patio you can add. The longer the patio, the more windows and patio doors you can add to let light in. These photos are of doors to a 9′ patio and a 12′ patio.

Choosing your doors

Style.

Choose a style of door that will complement the style of your home and your existing doors and windows. Traditional style homes may want traditional doors with pane inserts and matching windows, while more modern home styles may be enhanced with a cleaner, “no pane” look.

Energy efficiency.

Virginia contractor licensing

Sunday, April 13th, 2014

Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Registration - DPORThe Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation Board for Contractors “licenses businesses engaged in the construction, removal, repair, or improvement of facilities on property owned by others.”

The license has two parts: the class and the classification/speciality. The class of license – A, B, or C – determines the maximum monetary value of a project that can be performed. The classification/specialty determines the type(s) of work the contractor is licensed to perform.

Through the Virginia DPOR website license lookup at http://www.dpor.virginia.gov/LicenseLookup/, you can view any contractor’s license, including class, specialties, and any open and/or closed complaints. This is a useful tool for researching not just contractors, but any service provider engaging in a state-licensed occupation.

Windows and Home Renovations Direct is licensed under the corporate name SML Incorporated, license #2705063477. We are a Class A contractor, indicating that there is no monetary limit on work that can be performed, and our classifications/specialties are Building (BLD) and Home Improvement (HIC). Click here to view our license.

If you’re interested in hiring any type of contractor, be sure to do your research. And if you’d like to find out more about our licensure and the types of projects we’ve completed, please contact us.

Reduce allergens with hardwood floors

Hardwood floor harbor fewer allergens than carpet

Hardwood floor harbor fewer allergens than carpet.

Do you suffer from allergies? Dust mites live in carpet, and any allergens that come in through the windows or are tracked in from outside are trapped in the carpet with them.

If you want to reduce your allergy symptoms, consider replacing your carpeted floors with hardwood or hardwood laminate. By removing the carpet, you immediately remove the allergens trapped in it from your home. And with regular, easier cleaning, dust mites won’t accumulate on hardwood or laminate, so you’ll suffer less from allergies in the future, too.

If you have an older home, you may find that there is hardwood under the carpet that can be repaired and refinished. If you don’t have hardwood floors, we can install sub-flooring and hardwood or hardwood laminate, creating an attractive and “allergen-unfriendly” environment for you and your family.

In addition to making your home more comfortable, hardwood and hardwood laminate are more durable than carpet and increase the resale value of your home.

Custom Stonework Bathroom Vanity

Custom made vanity with custom granite top. The customer, as well as the fabricator, did a fantastic job showing the movement in the stone.

Custom stone work is a sure way to add elegance to any room in your home – including the bathroom!

Not only is it durable and attractive, but when done by one of our fabricators, it can become a piece of art as well as a functional part of your home.

We’ll help you choose the stone to best enhance the room it will be in, as well as finish it to bring out its beauty, and explain how to care for it – all for a price much lower than you might expect.

Add a kitchen island for more space

Monday, March 3rd, 2014
Update Your Kitchen

Adding an island in your kitchen can give you extra seating and more space for food preparation.

When people come to your home to visit, do they all end up gathering in your kitchen?

You can make your kitchen a more friendly and inviting space by adding a kitchen island. It gives the cook more storage and food preparation space, as well as providing extra seating for dining – or for all the people who come in to “help” you cook!

Freshen up your bathroom

Monday, February 24th, 2014
Tiled Shower with Niche

This is where an old bathtub sat. We replaced it with a fresh, new tiled shower with niche.

Whether you’re remodeling your home for your own enjoyment or preparing it to sell, upgrading your bathroom is one of the best investments you can make.

When bathroom fixtures become stained, cracked, or are in an old-fashioned style or color, it has a major impact on how you – and your guests – feel about your home.

Replacing old fixtures with upgraded ones – or creating an entirely custom look, as we did here – is an easy way to increase both your enjoyment of your home and its resale value.

Creating an open floor plan

Friday, May 17th, 2013

Open Floor ConceptThis family wanted an open floor concept.

We removed most of the wall to make a 14 foot opening. Then we added a support beam since this was a load bearing wall.

The family now has a wide open floor plan, and they love it!
