Adding a fireplace to your screened porch

Maximize the use of your screened porch by adding a fireplace

You already enjoy your screened porch on pleasant late spring, summer, and early fall days, but if you want to increase the time you can use your screened porch during the year, consider adding a fireplace.

Here are a few things you’ll need to consider when planning  a fireplace for your screened porch:

Location

The structure of your home and porch, its size, the direction it faces, the views you want to preserve, access to energy sources, and building codes all need to be taken into account when deciding where your fireplace can be placed on your porch.

We’ll help you take all factors into consideration when planning your new fireplace.

Both wood-burning and gas fireplaces are available. If you already use natural gas to heat your home, this may be an option. Otherwise, you’ll need to determine where to place your propane tank or determine if a wood-burning fireplace is a better option.

Your budget

In addition to choosing gas versus wood-burning, porch fireplaces can also be either inset or set in with new masonry. The exterior finish and trim also needs to be chosen. All of these factors needs to be taken into account when planning your fireplace. Having an idea of what you can afford to spend will help you determine feasible options.

Building codes, local ordinances, property owners association restrictions

Depending on where you live and the type of fireplace you choose, you’ll want to make sure that your choice complies with all applicable regulations. You’re also likely to need to get a building permit before construction and an inspection after the work is complete.

Screen porch adds outdoor living space

Tuesday, May 14th, 2013

Screened PorchIt’s a great time of year to consider adding some outdoor living space to your home.

There was nothing on the back of this house when we added the covered screen porch, complimented by the large rough sawn timbers wrapped with stone bases.

Notice how we were able to tie in the new stone with the original stone wall on the house. Retaining walls were added as well.
