Low-E Glass

The sun heats the inside, as well as the outside, of your home.

With summer here, you’re more likely to find any cats you have lying in the sunbeams coming through your windows. Why? Because of the heat the sun’s rays produces.

While fine for the kitties, the heat coming through your windows in the summer increases the cost of cooling your home.

You can reduce the effect of the sun’s heat on the interior of your home by replacing your old windows and glass doors with new ones made with Low-E glass. Low-E glass filters out light waves that transmit heat while allowing the wavelengths that transmit light to pass through.

What is Low-E glass?

Low-E Glass

Low-E glass filters out light waves that transmit heat while allowing the wavelengths that transmit light to pass through.

There is not “one type” of Low-E glass. Since it was first introduced, an array of Low-E glass options have been developed. The filtering of light wavelengths is done by a Low-E coating – a layer, or several layers, of metallic particles applied to the glass. If insulated glass is used, replacing the air between the sealed layers of glass with argon gas, which is denser than air, increases the insulating performance of the glass even more.

Why does Low-E glass help reduce energy costs?

The interior temperature of regular glass tends to be closer to the outside temperature than the inside temperature, which may heat the room in summer and cool the room in winter. The highest grades of Low-E glass can keep the interior temperature of the window within one degree Fahrenheit of the temperature of the interior of your home. The result: a more comfortable home and lower utility bills.
